One of the 18 major county cricket clubs in the English and Welsh domestic cricket structure, Somerset County Cricket club has seen some fantastic innings during its history and is definitely worth a visit.
It was in these very grounds that Archie Maclaren achieved his legendary two quadruple hundreds; a world record shared with Melbourne and Karachi and only followed 93 years later by Graeme Hick’s 405. Somerset County Cricket club also saw Jack Hobbs first equal, then beat the great WG’s record of 126 centuries in 1925.
Recent years have seen the club make an even greater name for itself on the world stage. Reaching the final of the Twenty20 Cricket cup competition on four occasions, Somerset County Cricket club became Twenty20 winners in 2005, beating Lancashire in the final at The Oval. The grounds have also played a major role in the cricket world cup too, having staged one day internationals in 1983 and again in 1999. In 2006, the club also became the official home of English women’s cricket.
