Somerset Space Walk

Open Year Round

The Somerset Space Walk is a model of the solar system set out in a sculptural trail model.

You and your friends or family can enjoy an adventurous afternoon walking along 14 mile towpath as you track the Sun and its planets set out in their proportionally accurate sizes and distances apart. The Space Walk was designed by Pip Youngman as a way to challenge people's perceptions of space and give people an opportunity to experience the vastness of our own Solar System.

The model is built to a scale of 1:530,000,000, which means that one millimetre on the model is equal to 530 kilometres in the solar system. The Sun can be found at Higher Maunsel Lock and 2 sets of planets are set out in both directions. Also, for less hardy walkers, the inner planets are within 67m of the Sun, and near to the Maunsel Canal Centre (and tea shop) at Lower Maunsel Lock, where a more detailed leaflet about the model is available.

When you are planning your visit to Taunton, be sure to include a visit to the Somerset Space Walk!
